This was years ago, II got contacted to do some mockups for packaging for a tea company. I was initially competing with several other artists. Then it was just me. I think it was suppose to be 300+ illustrations if I got the contract. Eventually the tea company decided they didn’t want to spend the money. Th ad agency paid me for the one drawing. I got to the place to pick up the check and when I got to the car it was for over 40k. Which would have been around the amount if I had gotten the contract. II sat there for a minute. And took the check back and got my 300 dollar check. I was so broke at the time it was painful, but I also thought it was funny.

Man, at least they still gave you something. initially I thought this story was them ghosting you after you were the final artist. Did they even end up using the single drawing?

Nope. They just paid me for one piece they never used. This is a microcosm of what happens at big studios that buy whole projects that get shelved. Until artists start doing co-op owned studios we will be always be subject to this kinda stuff…that’s life. Gotta laugh at it or die…lol

Also yes it is better to get paid for something rather than getting biffed on the bill altogether. I’m sure I still have at least 1 client that still owes me a couple grand from when I started doing live action video(must be 20 years ago now)…I had the opportunity to open a can of whup ass on the guy, but I had to let it go.

It feels so rare to see an agency pay for spec work these days… 300 ain’t bad tho (I’m broke)
